In semester one you will study the following two modules:
Advanced Biomedical Specialisms
This module provides an advanced level of knowledge and understanding of specialisms of Biomedical Science: Leadership & Quality Management, Nutrition & Public Health, Applied Biotechnology, and Cancer Biology. You will develop a critical awareness of these subject areas and be able to exercise an independent and scientifically justified opinion.
You will choose which assessments to complete and submit based on their personal interests among Nutrition & Public Health, Applied Biotechnology, and Cancer Biology (Leadership & Quality Management is mandatory).
- Leadership & Quality Management deals with application of quality management, leadership, and project management in healthcare to ensure effective patient and healthcare service outcomes. Leadership and Quality Management principles are fundamental to the delivery of safe, cost-effective, and fit for purpose healthcare based on clinical excellence.
- Nutrition & Public Health explores current concepts, controversies, and the latest methodological advances in the fields of nutrition and public health.
- Applied Biotechnology focuses on critically evaluating and interpreting current concepts, controversies, and the latest methodological advances in biotechnology.
- Cancer Biology appraises the processes that underlie tumourigenesis, with a focus on the molecular & biochemical basis, causes and diagnosis of cancer.
Advanced Molecular Biology and Genomics (30 credits)
This module consolidates advanced knowledge of principles and established and emerging diagnostic techniques in molecular biology and their applications in various biomedical disciplines. The molecular diagnosis of both infectious and non-infectious diseases is explored. You will study molecular diagnosis in various stages: prenatal, disease predisposition, disease detection, disease monitoring, and personalized medicine. Quality control and management in molecular diagnostics laboratories are also discussed.
Advanced Pathobiology and Diagnostics (30 credits)
This module deepens your understanding and evaluation of current practice, research, diagnosis, and emerging technologies in pathobiology in the main Biomedical Science disciplines, including blood sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cellular sciences. You will develop critical analysis and appraise existing and emerging diagnostic technologies and research. Additionally, you have the opportunity to enhance your research, enquiry, and evaluative skills in a practical workshop.
Research Methods and Advanced Biomedical Techniques (30 credits)
This module is designed to enhance your skills in research methods and provide an advanced understanding and practice of current techniques used in Biomedical Science laboratories. Lectures will provide you with an overview of research methods and techniques commonly used in Biomedical Science that you will then gain hands on experience with. By the end of the module, you will be able to conduct specialist biomedical science techniques, analyse data, and critically present and interpret laboratory results.
Postgraduate Research Project (60 credits)
This module provides you with the opportunity to design, execute and report upon a laboratory-based scientific project. You will be able to work safely and independently in a laboratory environment. By the end of this module, you will demonstrate self-direction, independence and originality in tackling and solving problems.
Additionally, a non-credit module is offered to further support you:
Advanced Professional and Laboratory Skills
This module provides you with the opportunity to develop your academic, professional and laboratory skills to enhance your personal and professional development.
